CANADIANS ABROAD Pas de Deux Until the last decade or so , Canada had to import most of the trappings of classi cal culture . The country had no major professional symphony orchestra until 1922 , no ballet troupe until 1939. But this week two Canadian ballet companies were on tour , and winning generous praise in U.S. cities as well as at home . The troupes : the Royal Winnipeg Ballet , which opened last week in Washington , and To ronto's National Ballet Company , which opened four days later in Buffalo , N.Y. The Winnipeg group had its beginnings 15 years ago , has toured Canada periodi cally since 1945. The company is young and zestful , favors new ballets , especially those developed from Canadian folk themes ( sample ballets performed in Washington : The Shooting of Dan Mc Grew , Shadow on the Prairie ) , but also does excerpts from such classics as Don Quixote and The Nutcracker . Originally composed almost exclusively of Winnipeg dancers ( featured Ballerina Carlu Carter was born there ) , the company now in cludes talent from many parts of Canada . Occasionally , Director - Founder - Choreog rapher Gweneth Lloyd ( TIME , Feb. 23 , 1953 ) signs up a guest star to dance a leading role and provide special box - office appeal ; last week Alicia Markova ap peared with the troupe in Washington . In 1949 , after the Winnipeg company had played to full houses in Toronto , a group of Toronto clubwomen decided that TIME , FEBRUARY 22 , 1954
