THE HERALD , MONTREAL , WEDNESDAY , FEBRUARY 17 , 1954 17 * Pat Pearce STAGE , SCREEN , RADIO , TV HER MAJESTY'S ROYAL WINNIPEG BALLET With Arnold Spohr , Eva von Genosy , Jean Stoneham , Carlu Carter , Bill McGrath . A revised Shadow on the Prairie , Gweneth Lloyd's sad little saga of a pioneer bride , and the dancing of Carlu Carter and Bill McGrath in another Lloyd ballet , Finishing School , proved more than a little in triguing at Her Majesty's last night , where the Royal Winnipeg Ballet moved into its second performance . The Prairie work seems a good deal stronger and much more impressive now than on first viewing . The first act , magnificently set against a panoramic western sky , a warm and cheerful summer mood into which both Miss Lloyd and wistful young dancer , Jose phine Andrews , subtly insert the first faint notes of the haunting loneliness that reaches its inevitable conclusion in the smothering chill of the prairie winter . The choreographer and designer , John W. Graham , have in the sec ond act united admirably with composer Robert Fleming to bring to the stage the almost tangible weight of the long cold , a weight against which the girl beats pitiably until she retreats to the warm haven of her marriage chest , and death . Josephine Andrews had a fine poignant quality , as the girl whose surroundings were too vast for her and was admirably assisted by Gordon Wales as her husband , Kay Bird , a rival , and a collection of early settlers whose portrayal found the company at its excellent best . * Carlu Carter and Bill McGrath charmed their way through the light diversion of Strauss , Lloyd and period mischief which is Finish ing School , and as pupil and ballet master were altogether delight ful . As indeed were the corps , and ballerinas Eva von Gencsy and Jean Stoneham , prancing in character roles . * Ballet Premier was repeated for the second night whose program also included Spohr and von Gencsy in the Black Swan Pas de Deux . Of this I can say little , my attention being temporarily diverted by the orchestra's churning out Tschaikowsky like an addled German band . Such glimpses of the stage as I did manage to snatch , however , suggested that the dancers were similarly disconcerted .
