Postlude Ballet Needs Solid Classic Foundation as on Shashington By Paul Hume Watching the Royal Winni peg Ballet last night in Sylphides " impressed one clear fact on me . This young company , which has so much in the way of a fine start , needs to concentrate on the acquisition of a solid classical foundation . Its work was more assured and gave every evidence of being more definitely in the dancers ' grasp than the relatively weaker choreography that character izes their own designers ' works . They should by all means continue with their folk rep ertoire , in the " Dan McGrew " and " Shadow on the Prairie ” pieces . But thorough study and preparation of such works as Sylphides , Swan Lake , perhaps a Giselle , or some of the early Balanchine works , would , together with the firm hand of a demanding ballet master place a firmer , higher level , their present growing manners . The central occasion for " Sylphides ” was the presence and effortlessly polished art of Alicia Markova , who will dance with them again tonight in their farewell . To watch Markova in a " Sylphides " is to see its Noc turne , its Prelude , and its Valses danced in that mood and supreme grace that made and kept this fragrant piece the dance classic it is . For a young company to support so rare a ballerina is an honor , and an opportunity to watch at close range the accomplishment of one who has had no superior in her realm . Thus the perfection of every footstep , every gesture of the arms , the position of the hands , should be graven in the minds ' eyes of each young Winnipeg dancer . The freshness of Markova's spirit was even more pro nounced in her delivery of an 1830 Bolero , filled with the simple style of that period , but a work that grows from its easy beginning to a flourish of great style at its close . All too brief , it won Markova repeated recalls . The company opened its pro gram with Concerto , to a trun cated version of the Rach maninoff Second , for piano . Designed by Miss Lloyd , it is really much too vague and sweet - ballet - school - girlish to stand with their other works . It shows Miss von Genscy at serious disadvantage , being quite outside her best orb . It does however . give Carlu Carter grateful moments , as did the_ _ “ Sylphides " to her and Miss Stoneham .
