THE WINNIPEG TRIBUNE , Sat. , Mar. 12 , 1949 MEN BEHIND FESTIVAL George S. Mathieson a The following sketch of George S. Mathieson Is sixth and final article in the series being written by W. S. Cumming , entitled , Behind the Scenes at the Music Festival , The term Crescendo in music may simply denote or demand an increase in volume of sound , but to anyone delving into the musical and cultural history of Winnipeg , it also , and quite unmistakably , points to a rather remarkable little vol ume published in 1935 and titled Crescendo with the sub title bear ing the inscription " A Business Man's Romance in Music . " The signature G. Sharp Major did not long hide the identity of the anonymous author , for with customary playfulness he had cho sen the initial letters of this signa ture as the counterpart of his own name , which happened to be none other than the subject of this sketch , George S. Mathieson , whom we unhesitatingly hail as the grand old man of the festival movement in Winnipeg and the whole Domi nion of Canada . Strangely enough , the title of this book also indicates the part George S. Mathieson has played in the musical life of Winnipeg for , apart !
