19.48 THE WINNIPEG TR Winnipeg Ballet Group Rates Superlatives Esprit de corps was never SO evident in performances of the Winnipeg Ballet in its decade of history , as it was Tuesday night when the first of two presenta tions was given before an en thusiastic capacity audience in the Playhouse Theatre . Final perform ance will be given at 8.45 p.m. today , after which the company will begin preparations to we ! come three other dance groups from Eastern and Western Cana da , which will attend the Dominion wide dance festival in Winnipeg , April 29-30 and May 1 . Allegory , Gweneth Lloyd's 26th creative effort as choreographer , received premiere Tuesday . It takes the form of a dramatic ex pression of a poem by Perey Bysshe Shelley , using the sweeping rhythms and spiritual evolutions of Cesar Franck's Symphonic Variations as musical background . A realistic curtain , of decadent aspect on left , with tall marble columns and three rounding steps in right foreground , provides an expansive lanscape for pyrotech nical and expressive developments . Individual performances sur passed all previous standards Tuesday , but before paying tribute to such work , one must commend the corps de ballet . All members showed a unity and co - operative zeal which was a delight to witness . The femin ine group in particular was notably efficient . Etude , one of Miss Lloyd's first classical items , has never been presented with such fluent , grace full ease and poetic ecstasy . A new pas de deux , danced by Jean McKenzie and Arnold Spohr , was a vision of loveliness . Mr. Spohr has made vast strides in technical precision and his work now shows a maturity hitherto unrevealed . His entrechats , tours dans l'air and " lifts " with partner have become most assured and authori tative . Miss McKenzie has never projected such beauty in ethereal , floating movements , nor displayed such technical perfection in dif ficult evolutions . Her work in Allegory was outstanding . Difficult Feats Allegory , 16 minutes in duration , seems like five in its quickly mov ing sequences . Although one over heard two ladies exclaim : " It leaves one gasping ! " _ the ballet is not wholly satisfying , partly be cause of its brevity . The music ends suddenly in an impassioned rising climax . One wishes it could have continued on for at least another 10 minutes to allow further devel opment of illuminating detail and characterization . This , one feels certain , would have brought deeper and more lasting impression . But the ballet , as pre sented , demands within its lyric and dramatic compass , some of the most difficult physical feats yet con trived by Miss Lloyd . The two leading protagonists , Arnold Spohr and Jean McKenzie , as Apollo and Euterpe , meet all de mands with an agility , spontaneity and intensity of dramatic fervour , that thrills the senses and delights the eye . Lillian Lewis , as Terpsichore , also shines resplendently , but it was in the final ballet , Chapter 13 , with all its melodramatics of a woman seeking revenge for the murder of her lover , that Miss Lewis projects with unerring skill , a memorable dramatic impact . Infectious Enthusiasm Joyce Clark , who leads the fem inine group of eight , in Allegory , in its depiction of Woman , merits spe cial praise for her solo sequences . She showed a plastic grace of move ment and an expressive use of hands and arms which proved one of the most revealing characteriza tions in the ballet . Revival of Object Matrimony , scene II , provided a " warming up " exercise . The lilting Schubertain music was matched by the infec tious enthusiasm displayed by all dancers . Matthew Wiesenthal , who danced the role of Darcy , " cato of the season , " for the first time , showed adept skill in characteriza tion , and Casimir Carter again pro voked much laughter in his por trayal of Rev. Mr. Collins . Reg . Hawe , John Waks and Arn lold Spohr upheld previous high standards in Chapter 13 , which won loud acclaim . Joyce Clark , Jean McKenzie , Lillian Lewis , also were in top form in this exciting excur sion in melodramatics on a side street in New York.-S. R. M.
