WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Ballet Scores Triumph Local dance history was made at the Playhouse theatre , Tuesday night , when the Winnipeg Ballet club staged its premiere perform ance . It was definitely a triumphant evening and there is every indica tion that the club will go on to even greater achievements . A large and enthusiastic audience gave curtain call after curtain call . Gweneth Lloyd , artistic director and ballet mistress , James Robertson , who conducted the splendid orchestra , and all who took part can feel very proud of themselves . Three ballets were given - rang ing from the classicism of Tschai kowsky and Arensky divertisse ments , through the delicious humor of a Mozartian comedy to the sweeping measures of a modern interpretive conception . There were ragged edges , of course , and times when Miss Lloyd's choreography seemed a little fussy and crowded . But the good points overshadowed the weaker ones . By far the most original and striking effort of the evening was Kilowatt magic , although the com bination of conventional costumes with modernistic ones was a mis take , one thought . Danced to Smetana music , the ballet proved to be a tempestuous and exciting experience . the rushing move ments of the junior members achieving a tempo in the opening moments that grew in intensity and fire . Particularly outstanding in this case , was the work of P. Stone and E. Jamieson . In this ballet Miss Lloyd's talents for chore ography were strikingly to the fore in groupings of the ensemble . The Wager , done to an arrange ment of pieces by Mozart , was all arch grace and humor . J. Mc Kenzie was a feathery , demure daughter , Betty Hey was shrewdly comic as the minx , and P. Stone and G. Hill were excellent as the young lover and the rake , respectively . G. McFetridge mimed and danced the role of the lady in a manner to make it one of the highlights of the evening . There was a lovely pattern to most of the choreography in the Tschaikowsky and Arensky diver tissements . However , the move ment , particularly in the waltz , seemed a little crowded at times . The fourth Arensky variation by Mary Gwen Reid was a bit of melt ing loveliness and ladies and gentle men of the ensemble distinguished themselves on more than one OC casion . Indeed , one could name each individual for moments of excellence in all three ballets . Mr. Robertson had a fine orches tra , and he achieved results that were worth a brace of adjectives . David Yeddeau , who was re sponsible for makeup , transformed a group of young Winnipeggers into exotic creatures of the dance . Prof. John Russell contributed some striking sets . Costumes by s Ruth Haney and Mary Morriss t were entrancing . The ballet will he repeated Wednesday evening. M.
