She This means the cancellation of a performance at Sudbury , Ont . , but the company will con tinue its original itinerary in Toronto next week . our of no stated that the National Ballet Company of Canada , with Celia Franca as director , is " over representing itself as the only national ballet organization in Canada " . The National Ballet is a Toronto group . Miss Lloyd doesn't like the way Miss Franca is trying to raise $ 50,000 which her com pany needs to enable it to com plete its continent - wide tour of Canadian and U.S. cities , Money Troubles The National Ballet Company opened its one - week “ Toronto season ' at the Royal Alexandra Theatre on Monday night . Dur ing the program , Miss Franca who is prima ballerina as well as director , stepped to the foot lights and made an impassioned plea for help in " the desperate financial situation the company is facing " . When she concluded her speech , a bevy of attractive girls distributed blank cheques , enclosed in envelopes addressed to , " Save the Ballet Fund . " . That same night , Miss Lloyd ran advertisements in Toronto newspapers in which she said , " The well - advertised financial straits and predictions of , " Tra gedy for Canadian culture , ' by one of our ballet companies must be giving considerable alarm to dancers and to those who are interested in the fu ture of this art in Canada , The Advertisement “ This fear should be allayed by a presentation true facts , " continued the advertise ment . It then gave a brief re view of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's history , its future plans , and the opportunities it holds for ballet dancers in Canada . In Winnipeg today , officials of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet backed Miss Lloyd's actions . " Miss Lloyd inserted the advertisements on her own , " said Robert Kipp , president of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet . " But I think she was quite justified in doing so . She had her own position to defend as the originator of professional ballet in Canada . ' Unfair Statements ' " My personal opinion is that Miss Franca has made some very unfair statements in ad vertising her ballet company , " continued Mr. Kipp . " But as president of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet , I say that each of our companies have their own problems and those problems won't be solved by us fighting each other . " Mr. Kipp pointed out that press releases from the National Ballet Company were all aimed at creating the impression that it was the only professional ballet company in Canada . " Miss Franca came from Eng land in 1951 to form her group . It is just entering its fourth season , " he stated . " The Royal Winnipeg Ballet is starting its 16th season this year . ” " Too Extravagant " Lady Tupper , co - ordinating director of the Royal Winni peg Ballet , stressed , too , the difference in the length of time the two professional companies have been operating . " While I think Miss Franca has done wonders with her company , I feel she is still too recently arrived in Canada to under stand the Canadian psycholo gy , " said Lady Tupper . " Miss Franca has too extray agant ideas . She is trying too hard to imitate the big , wealthy companies , " Lady Tupper con tinued . " She doesn't seem to realize that in Canada you can't just demand a budget of $ 100 , 000 a year and get it for a bal let company . In Winnipeg , we have learned to fit our garment to cloth and gradually build what we feel is a true Canadian ballet company . " In Toronto , Miss Franca said simply , " It is not in my nature to reply to such charges . " Of ficials of the National Ballet Company said they had statement in connection with the affair . Undisturbed by all the fuss at directorial levels , the 33 members of the Royal Winni peg Ballet have a more imme diate problem at the moment . They were scheduled to leave Winnipeg tonight for the start of their trans - Canada tour , fol lowed by a week in Washing ton , D.C. , and several per formances in the middle - west U.S. But illness has struck at two leading dancers and the tour's start has been delayed until Saturday night .
