Pas de Deux , Don Quixote , by Carlu Carter and Bill McGrath rounded out the well - balanced program with a delightful per . U formance . BURLESQUE , G BALLET’S BILL soe By HUGH THOMSON Islington , Feb. 2 - Robert Ser vice's Dan McGrew was shot in high style here last night before a capacity crowd in Etobicoke collegiate auditorium . The stage was “ the Malamute Saloon " and the boys and girls who " were whooping it up , " modern - ballet style , were the cast of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet of Canada . To night will see a completely new show as the wind - up of the two night run - completely new ex cept for this frozen - north " mel lerdraimah , " which will be given a repeat performance . The Winnipeg Ballet is on its North American tour which will carry it to points in Quebec , the Maritimes , a week's stand in Washington's National theatre and Chicago's opera house . The troupe will be travelling until May ' 22 . Up to the time the curtains parted on this Dan McGrew epic , the fare served by the Winni peggers had been sober and , for the most part , traditional . It opened with the second act to Swan Lake , featuring the excel lent dancing of Jean Stoneham as the Swan Queen . The corps de ballet danced with precision and formed effective groups when principals held the spotlight . The audience relished the dance of the little swans , which was brought off with twinkle - toe efficiency . Exciting Music There was an imaginative backdrop that got away from the dingy one so often seen in the traditional " manner . Lighting was too bright for the fantasy of the scene , and the two - piano team assaulted Tschaikowskys ' lovely score with machine - gun efficiency . Next came Gweneth Lloyd's abstract choreography to Rach maninoff's 2nd Piano Concerto , with cuts to the finale . This won a big hand because the music is exciting and Miss Lloyd's dance pointed up the headlong pas sion of the score , this time well served by the two pianos . But costumes and backdrop by David Yeddeau were so wishy - washy you got the feeling he wished he'd been dressing up a ballet to Debussy , not Rachmaninoff . Carlu Carter and Bill McGrath danced the virtuoso Don Quixote " pas de deux . " She was very good , but he seemed to find the small stage cramping his style . Razzle - Dazzle Burlesque Then came the overture to Dan McGrew from the duo - pian ists . They played the strains to " There's a Tavern in the Town . " back went the curtains and on went the show real razzle dazzle burlesque with relish and mustard , hot mustard , that is . " " The Lady That's Known as Lou " was danced by prima bal lerina Eva von Genscy . Arnold Spohr , depicting a character re sembling nobody living or dead , danced " the stranger . ” w
