Style Contrasts In Second Night By HAROLD WHITEHEAD The second evening of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet's Montreal engage ment , at Her Majesty's Theatre last night , offered a contrast in dance styles with both modern and clas sical presented . Out of its modern repertory the small but very lively and well integrated company staged Gweneth Lloyd's Shadow On The Prairie , while the classical school was re presented by the Black Swan Pas De Deux from Swan Lake . Both styles were well - handled . Miss Lloyd's ballet , done to music composed by Robert Fleming , tells of how pioneer life on the Canadian plains affects & sensitive young woman fresh out from Scotland . Produced in two scenes , the first sequence shows she and her new husband settling into a temperory home with the help of friendly neighbors . A gift ofa small tree , however , reminds the woman of her homeland and she gets the first flash of understanding of how hard her life is going to be . The second scene , set in winter , follows the breaking down of her mind when the great loneliness of the prairies takes hold of her . The ballet , though extremely well danced and costumed , struck this reviewer as taking too much time to get around to its climax . Much of the action is repeated too often and the theme of the " other woman " which could have added a strong sub - plot , is not developed enough . We have no criticism about the staging . The leading characters were very well taken by Josephine Andrews and Gordon Wales and the last sequence , when the young wife locks herself in the house to spend her final moments in lonely madness , was most impressive . The Black Swan Pas De Deux gave Montrealers an opportunity to admire and approve of Eva von Gencsy's technique in a class ical role . She danced with plenty of style and verve but was still precise and paid great attention to detail . Arnold Spohr did not come off nearly so well in the supporting part . He semed , at least last night , a bit out of his element . The program closed with Finish ing School , one of those arch and coy little affairs that every com pany has in its repertory to give the audience a chuckle and allow the dancers to show off their comedy talents . Carlu Carter , a charming little sprite , had the part of an impish new student in a school for girls . She danced lightly and gracefully and at the same time created a comic characterization of no mean proportions . The remainder of the company supported Miss Carter competently . Particularly noteworthy in this ballet were the colorful and well designed costumes . The company started off the eye . ning with a repeat performance of Arnold Spohr's Ballet Premier . Eric Wild conducted the orchestra .
