Ken Rell - Washington Post NATIONAL BALLET COMPANY'S " GISELLE " ROYAL WINNIPEG BALLET'S " BALLET PREMIER abit Istugon - suq a 22919 901 av In a new cultural field , youth , energy and growing pains . their city ought to have a ballet company of its own . They raised $ 25,000 to form the National Ballet Company and hired Celia Franca of the famed London Sad ler's Wells group to run it . Franca re cruited her own dancers , methodically drilled her troupe in the fundamentals of classic ballet . Determined to build a rounded , well - disciplined company , she avoided building up individual stars ( she dances leads herself , but is usually billed only as " artistic director ” ) . Neither the Winnipeg nor the Toronto group yet has the smooth , professional polish of older companies in Europe or the U.S. But both are making progress while fighting the traditional battle of all unsubsidized ballet troupes : to stay more or less solvent . Said the New York Herald Tribune's Dance Critic Walter Terry , of the Royal Winnipeg Ballet : " A company of energy , of taste , of youthful eagerness and of promise of maturer things to come . ” The Buffalo Evening News Music Critic Theodolinda C. Boris wrote of the Toronto group : " Scrupulous training has emphasized precision , grace and expressive timing without forfeiting spontaneity for the hard veneer of professionalism . " But the Washington Post's Paul Hume pointed out the real significance of the Washing ton debut : " While Winnipeg's company is young and has growing pains , Washington has no professional company at all . "
