PAT PEARCE Entertainment HER MAJESTY'S THE ROYAL WINNIPEG BALLET Directed by Gweneth Lloyd , with Arnold Spohr , Jean Stoneham and Eva von Genscy . The Winnipeg Ballet became The Royal Winnipeg Ballet half - way through last night's performance at Her Majesty's an appropriate and happy coincidence . The telegram signifying the Queen's consent was relayed from Winnipeg , and read from the stage where the Canadian Company was giving the first of four performances . And having established the fact that it is Canadian , let's forget about it , and consider the company on its own merits . It has plenty , an excellent corps , several very fine soloists , at least one gifted and resident choreographer , besides the indispensable and indefatigable Gweneth Lloyd , high polish and an exuberant spirit . It's a a very good company indeed , and even more than that , it's interesting . Last night's program included two new works , Gweneth Lloyd's Shadow on the Prairie and Arnold Spohr's Intermede . The first was a poignant thing of prairie loneliness which was developed capably , if with strong overtones of Agnes de Mille . The second was an abstract work , daring and original both in conception and execution . Set to Cimarosa ' delicate Concerto for Obos and Strings , it employs nine dancers to create intricate , geo metric variations against a magnificent backdrop ( by John W. Graham , who also designed the striking decor for Shadow on the Prairie ) . Premier danseur Spohr was established by his first work , Ballet Premier , as a choreographer of great promise . Intermede is both a re assurance that he intends to fulfill that promise , and a very exciting piece of choreography . Arabesque , divertissements in traditional style , and the roistering , gay and delightful Shooting of Dan McGrew , both by Gweneth Lloyd , provided an interesting variety and a good cross - section of the versatility of the company . Oustanding individual dancers were Eva von Genscy , Jean Stoneham , Carlus Carter , Marina Katronis , Arnold Spohr , and Roger Fisher ( the broad comedy Dan ) ; the settings were striking , and the evening altogether delightful , fresh and stimulating .
