Ching America Dance Review Canada Group Lacks Flair an BY ANN BARZEL THE WEEKEND INCLUDED a minor ballet troupe in the Opera House and a major modern dance company in the 8th St. Theater . The Royal Winnipeg Ballet was outstanding in this . in the Opera House Saturday night proved to be a rather unsophisticated organization , not without engaging young charm . Harriette Ann Gray and her company in the 8th St. Theater Sunday night ' presented dance on an adult art level . They illus trated how lucid modern dance can be and how great a technical facility it has de veloped . The one note of similarity in the two troupes is the de gree of technical proficiency achieved by the people con cerned . The technique of the Cana dians was not used imagina tively . The youngsters were put through paces set by well - versed elders who have respect for the rules of bal let , but little of the dash and flair of the theater . PERHAPS THE poor show was due to poor program ming . The company's most praised works were not shown . " Finishing School ” to Strauss music was naive . Overdone mugging was gen erally indulged in under the guise of pantomime . The Don Quixote pas de deux was danced in a version with less pyrotechnics_than . our Alonsos and Slavenskas use and more quasi - Spanish stylization . Carlu Carter gave a good account of her self in this . The best of the Winnipeg ballets was director Gwen neth Lloyd's " Concerto " set " o Rachmaninoff's second piano concerto .
