Thashington La Markova Pleases With ‘ Dying Swan BY JOHN HASKINS The Royal Winnipeg Ballet benefited greatly Wednesday night by the presence as guest star of Alicia Markova , who will finish out the week with the troupe at the National Theater . Markova and her partner , Ro man Jasinski , appeared on the bill with Fokine's " Les Syl phides , " and Markova was billed alone in the famed “ Dying Swan " solo , which the program announced was being danced in memory of Pavlova . The bal lerina drew a half - dozen curtain calls for her " Dying Swan , " which was danced with con siderable drama and much more personality than Markova cared to inject into her work in " Syl . phides . " The presence of Markova threw into high relief some of the strengths and weaknesses of the company . Against her chilly technical excellence and seeming unconsciousness of au dience in " Sylphides , " Carlu Carter and Jean Stoneham in solo bits set up an affecting de light in their work and a thoroly delightful esprit . They can use some of the Markova polish , and they will certainly acquire it in time , but where will Markova find again that wonderful fresh . ness ? Roman Jasinski was about as awkward an attendant as any ballerina ever had to put up with . It was not a great " Sylphides , " but there was much good in it . The corps de ballet was extreme ly pretty , and well drilled . The evening opened with Gweneth Lloyd's " Shadow on the Prairie , " which was danced on Monday night . Carlu Carter again did her appealing and sometimes dramatic best with the drawn - out story of the home sick pioneer girl , but the piece was still too long . Somone in the stage manage ment agreed with this verdict on Wednesday evening , for Carter's disappearance into the wedding chest was made uncomfortably hasty by a too - early final cur tain . The program concluded as on Monday night with Lloyd's " The Shooting of Dan McGrew . " Mar kova , will dance again on Friday night . 9
