Hamilton and Rev. IIUruv m . ia ai Ballet Scores In Performance To Aid China THAT HAT the Winnipeg Ballet club is beyond the purely experimental and formative stage was again indicated Friday night in the Playhouse theatre when Gweneth Lloyd's group of dancers presented the first of two performances to aid the Chinese War Relief fund . Three ballets were revived Friday and the same works will be performed tonight . They include Etude , classical ballet danced to Chopin's romantic music , with decor by David Yed deau ; Through the " oking Glass , in which Jean McKenzie as Alice , shines resplendently , and The Wise Virgins . which utilizes arrange ments of Bach Chorales , including the deeply expressive number , Sheep May Safely Graze . Prior to the performance Mrs. R. F. McWilliams stated that through the generosity of all those who hav : given their time and ser vices , all expenses had been met and the total receipts from the two performances will be donated to the Chinese relief fund . The won derful spirit of the Chinese people , " who took a long view of time , " would ultimately bring victory in this war , " Mrs. McWilliams said . Tonight Mr. Justice Dysart will speak . Lady Tupper is chairman of the entertainment for the relief fund . All the dancing Friday was more than competent . The corps de ballet excelled itself in its im portant role in Etude , where the ever - changing colorful patterns wove intricate designs with light some grace and spontaneity , Impressive Illusion John Russell's effective setting provides one of the primary fac tors for success of The Wise Vir gins . Dance action and the group miming is done on a ramp , with the topaz - blue sky backdrop de vised to create an impressive spatial illusion , while the perform ers go on i'om one aspect of the dance to another . Friday the dancers gave an even better , a more fluent performance than one had seen previously . Jean McKenzie and Paddy Stone Spiritual Apothcosis dominate the spectacle , with Miss McKenzie pro viding an enthralling interlude of deeply spiritual quality in several sequences . Betty Hey - Farrally , leading a group of five ballerinas representing Foolishness , and Kay Esau heading the group represent ing Wisdom , shared honors , and the two children , Clare Brown and Shirley Kobrinsky as Youthfulness , were delightful in duo and group movements . Paddy Stone's work was particularly successful in giv ing a vigorous dramatic quality to his characterization in Wise Vir gins , which notably helped to hold the abstract sequences together . Authoritative Creation Just as Massine is said to have courted trouble in his symphonic ballets by adding a visual element to music already familiar purely as music , so the present work may not say to every observer what the Bach music has always said to him . There is certainly nothing in Wise Virgins , however , that could pos sibly offend the most austere purists , for the choreography is characterized by a deeply intuitive musical sense . It is , indeed , in every way a beautiful and authori tative creation , once the musical hurdle has been taken , and shows itself both in its lofty content and its mastery of form as the handi work of one whose creative in stincts / is beginning to play a great part in the cultural life of Winni per.-S.R.M. as
