Robert S. Williams Press of Terpsichore Limited P.O. Box # 563 , Postal Station ' O ' . Toronto , Ontario M4T 2N4 September 10 , 1986 . Mr. Felix Cherniavsky Medicine Hat College 299 College Drive S. E. Medicine Hat , Alberta I1A 376 > Dear Mr. Cherniavsky : I am sorry that this letter has taken awhile to be written , but I was away for most of August and had a great deal to do upon my return . To address the issues you set out in your letter of August 2nd , I think that the publication of any rigorously researched book on Maud Allan will be a very welcomed addition to the dance literature of the world , let alone Canada . I'm not too clear on what the SSHRCC has in mind when it suggests that you publish Maud's " repertoire " . I would , however , think that such a publication should naturally include , if at all possible , contemporary critical assessments of her works , as well as a discussion of the responses which she received from the general public , descriptions of her costumes , music , sets , etc. A straight list of pieces and premiers and the such would , as you suggest , " make for dry reading indeed " . When you talk about descriptions of her movements , do you mean that you have enough material to create a technique manual with diagrams and full , written explanations ? Or do you mean something more along the lines of a short glossary of her movements ? If the first case is true then I would think that it may do very well as a separate book . If there isn't enough material for a separate Volume I think that it could easily be worked into the pages of a book like the one mentioned in the above paragraph as an appendix , if not in the body proper . You also mention a biography you have written on Allan . I think that this too would be an important and exciting publication . It might be worth linking it to a republication of her 1908 autobiography My Life and Dancing , as well as to some of the articles she wrote during her career . As to the question of my company publishing these books , I would indeed be very interested . I If they were to have the international appeal that you suggest , ( and I think you are right ) , I don't feel that I would have any difficulty finding distributors or perhaps Co - publishers in either Britain or America . I can think of a few companies now that may want to undertake such a project as this .
