Graheunstown Festival Newspaper 1998 Drama The cult of Maud Veil of Disgrace . By Anton Burggraaf , guest writer MAUD ALLAN was a dancer and proto feminist , unconcerned with outward Edwardian conservatism . Taking her lead from women pioneers like Sarah Bernhardt , Allan was once the most famous woman artist in the English speaking world . Ironically , her fame was eclipsed by dance darlings like Isadora Duncan , whom she loathed . Allan was flamboy ant and free like Duncan , but to some she was a fraud , riding on the outrage of her art and life , more than on the quality of its performance . Award - winning actress Belinda Harward , plays Maud Allan with gusto , tracing her life of experiment until the famous libel trial where she , like Oscar Wilde , fought in vain to clear her name against a far more powerful force . She was accused of being a member of the " cult of the clitoris , " which , even then , could have been more simply translated as a society of women who prefer the company of other women . But at the turn of the century , things were just not that simple . True or not , the allegations were part of a greater British movement lead by news paper editor Noel Pemberton - Billing . With a foul right - wing agenda , it spe а cialised in mongering fear for the other . ' The play is a forceful evocation of these times . It is a handsome , original work by director Brenda Lauth , taken mainly from court records of Allan's trial . Although the dramatisation is not always totally successful and I would have liked more detailed characterisa tion from Harward , it is a fascinating portrayal of a woman who would not bow to religious stricture and ridiculous social constraint . It powerfully exposes yet another instance where bigotry and homophobia triumph on the flimsiest of evidence and where society's darkest fantasies are manipulated for dubious gain . As a one - woman show , it makes a fitting companion piece to Sabina's Splendid Brain where another lost history is reclaimed . IN DISGRACE : Belinda Harward as Maud Allan in Veil of Disgrace .
