Note : Maud was born in Toronto in 1873 , on George Street , just one block away from the George St. offices of the Dance Collection Danse Archives !! monograph in the Fall . Gail was chosen Miss Regina in 1927 and a photograph of her and Mayor J. McAra on the steps of City Hall provide a charming glimpse into the fashion of the time . She produced a record entitled , " Ballet Class with Gail Grant " and wrote and illustrated a book titled , " Technical Manual and Dictionary of Classical Ballet " , which continues to sell and has been reprinted three times . Many former dancers including Toronto's Jeanette Heller , Regina's Nancy Caldwell , and Winnipeg's Amold Spohr continue to visit Gail at her Florida residence . Gail is 81 years old and can proudly celebrate a life - long professional dance career in both Canada and the United States . 9 TERESA MANN A visit from former National Ballet of Canada dancer , Teresa Mann , brought us up - to - date on Teresa's life before and after the NBC . Born in Panama to a Canadian father and Panamanian mother , she lived in Peru as a teenager . Teresa went to College in the U.S. , joined the National Ballet in 1956 and left in / 61 . She then lived and worked in England where she studied with Audrey de Vos and was later invited to Panama to start a school . Margot Fonteyn lent her name to this school where they hoped to attract South American dancers . Along with other dancers , Teresa helped to found the company " Ballet Concerto " , where she performed for many years . Throughout this time Teresa continued to teach and recently celebrated the 25th anniversity of her school , " Escuela de Danzas , Teresa Mann " . She is married to a Panamanian and has three children . Her 23 - year - old daughter , Myriam , is also a dancer . Postcard of Maud Allan . Photo taken in Liverpool , circa 1908 . published to commemorate her 250th consecutive performance at the Palace . The linen - cover publication , printed in 1908 , was given to patrons as a souvenir . included are photographs of Maud dancing , sitting for portraits and posing in various costumes . Occasionally photographs provide insight into a personality , but these images of her vary so dramatically that we see Maud in many character guises -- sweet , angry , humble , determined , diffident . Indeed a controversial dancer , she travelled in Europe , India , Australia , United States and Canada giving solo oncerts . Her famous " The Vision of Salome " dance , had international critics arguing about her true talent . Dance Collection Danse plans to publish Felix Chemiavsky's , " Did She Dance " - a collection of critical REGINA'S GAIL GRANT York University graduate dance student , Karen Rennie , is working on a monograph about Gail ( Edith ) Grant's career as a dancer , choreographer and teacher in Regina in the 1930's . A grant from Dance Saskatchewan will assist Karen in doing the necessary investigative work , including oral histories and a trip to Saskatoon and Regina for further research . The DCD archives holds numerous materials on Gail , some donated by Gail herself and others on loan from Nancy Caldwell . DCD intends to publish Karen's LOOKING BACK AT THE NBC " Pete " ( Macdonald ) Beatty , who was instrumental in raising funds to enable Dance Collection Danse to purchase the 100 ballet drawings created in the early / 40's by Canadian artist Grant Macdonald , has been filling DCD in on her activities . She was active on the National Ballet Women's Committee from the beginnings of the Company , was Committee Chairman in 1954/55 , remained an active member through the 50's & 60's , and continues as an Honorary Member . Pete was asked to address the current National Ballet Volunteer Committee , at their annual general meeting at the O'Keefe Centre , on her experiences in the early days of the Company . It is important to note that people are becoming more aware of the significant contributions made by the hundreds of volunteers who devote themselves to assisting arts organizations and artists . We are sure that Pete's unique humour , perspective , experience and continuing interest assisted her in offering up an energetic , moving and vital speech
