No. 2 , 1995 .... continuing the conversation MAUD ALLAN Was There a Salomé ? - The house in which Miriam and I live -- also the DCD Archives --was built circa 1880. The owner before us - I'll call him Gerhardt - hung himself in a cupboard Xmas eve , 1980. He was a skilled handy man and had the basement filled with tools , bits of wood and as I eventually be gan to discover , many clever caches in walls , under benches , all over . I really don't subscribe to ghosts / spirits , etc. However , when I would go to the basement , I always found myself in the state of " chill " . A year or so later the " chill " wasn't there anymore . I guess I got used to the basement . Maud was born just one block away from our house on George Street , just north of Shuter . When I first saw her house I felt the " chill " again . The park south of Shuter Street had a skating rink in the winter . Her house is adjoined to an apartment building where her friends lived , and the remains of a corner store where she bought candy are still visible . There is something about these very buildings , trees , side walks and streets that can evoke the " chill " . There is a particular intangible awe that won't leave you alone . So we present two images . One of Maud's birthplace , and one of her second home . Hamilton Barrett and myself have special " feelings " about these images . We were there ! Lawrence Adams Dr. Adela S. Roatcap of the Univer sity of San Francisco - currently writ ting a biography of Isadora Duncan , initiated a course called " The Story of Salomé : From Josephus to Sunset Boulevard " , at the Fromm Institute in the fall of 1994. It takes as a point of departure , the Centenary of the Wilde / Beardsley " fabulous Salomé " , and looks at " the Ballet Russe to Hollywood " following other in terpreters including Loie Fuller and Maud Allan . The reading list includes Cherniavsky's The Salomé Dancer , Puffet's Richard Strauss ' Salomé and Wilde's Salomé . The poignant question is , " Was there a Salomé " ? [ Well if there was ... she will never be the same ! ) On topic , we include a ( slightly edited for length ] excerpt from a serialized newspaper article titled How I Startled the a World , published in the San Francisco Call & Post in 1921 , in which Maud wrote her interpretation of ole ’ Salomé’s predica ment . We wonder if Oprah knows about this story ... : " Now this is the Dance of ‘ Salome ' . " I want you to visual ize as I do every time that I dance this creation of mine the apartments in the Palace of Herod Antipas , Tetrarch of Gali lee and Perera , a man mighty in wrath , but easily moved to The house at left is Maud's birthplace on George Street , just north of Shuter Street in Toronto . The single building appears to have been two separate dwellings . The building in back with the dormers is the oldest extant apartment building in Toronto , Built circa 1850. Photo : Miriam Adams Above , Fair Oak Street in San Francisco . The new build ing on the left is on the lot where Maud's family home was . Their house may have been similar to the two on the right . However , as Hamilton Barrett points out , there is mention of the Durrant family " shack " in a newspaper article .
