The Alberta Foundation for the Arts 5th Floor 10158 - 103 Street Edmonton , Alberta T5J OX6 March 24 , 1991 To whom it may concern : RE : Appraisal Felix Cherniavsky - " Did She Dance ? " I should first point out that as Co - Director of Dance - Collection Danse I will be partially responsible for making an agreement for the publishing of this text as well as the production of the the finished publication . Dance Collection Danse is intent on publishing this text for the following reasons -- which I trust you will also accept as my appraisal of the text : 1 ) The text provides insights into and rationales for the controversy which continually surrounded Maud Allan's short but brilliant career , and positions her in a dance context directly between the Romantic age and the developing modernism / expressionism of the early modern dancers . This was a transitional era filled with turmoil and discovery , the effects of which still impinge on most Western societies . This text puts us squarely in the midst of this era and demonstrates prevailing attitudes and actions as a result of this dancer's art . In this way , the text should have a broad appeal as an entertainment . It may further provide an interesting and popular example to feminists ' point of view , as well as provoking scholars to examine the then evolving and now current artistic trends . 2 ) Cherniavsky , who has clearly studied his subject intimately , provides a number of opinions resulting from his lengthy analysis which should further add to the social and artistic debates of the present day - which many have defined as the burgeoning of a Neo Romantic Age . However , the entire text requires fine tuning plus additional information and background to make it into a " good read " . As well , the text will be become more significant if bibliographies and sources are expanded . Lawrence Adams
