Felix Cherniavsky , the compiler of this critical compendium , is the author of The Salome Dancer ( McClelland and Stewart , with distribution in the United States and and the United Kingdom ) a thoroughly researched biography of Maud Allan , known to him in his childhood as " Aunt Maud . " Given Maud Allan's personal papers some ten years ago and following exhaustive interviews with surviving members of the Cherniavsky family and others who never forgot Maud Allan's mysterious art , his research , first published in a series of five articles ( 1983-6 ) in Dance Chronicle , revealed the critical record , as unknown as it is colorful , of this Canadian born artist , in her day acclaimed as a leading light of the ' aesthetic ' or ' classical ' school of dancing . Without any previous affiliation with the dance community but with highly honed critical skills , in Did She Dance ? Felix Cherniavsky has provided the international dance community with raw material with which to reappraise the nature of Maud Allan's peculiar art and its significance , peripheral or otherwise , in the evolution of early twentieth century dance history . In addition to contemporaneous reviews , Did She Dance includes Maud Allan's charming but deceptive autobiography , My Life and Dancing ( 1908 ) , interviews , personal recollections , and the complete excerpts of the letters the manager of the Maud Allan / Cherniavsky Trio tour of India / Australasia 1913/5 wrote to his wife .
