Among her more celebrated dances were The Vision of Salome , March funebre by Chopin , Valse triste , and " Aase's Death " from Peer Gynt , Her joyous dances included Valse caprice , the Blue Danube , Mendelssohn's Spring Song , and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy , symbolizing the lost innocence of her brother . Maud's performance tour from 1910 to 1923 took her to all five continents . While on tour in Johannesburg she met the Cherniavsky Trio of Leo , Jan , and Mischel , with whom she toured extensively in India , the Far East , and Australasia . During this time Maud developed a passionate and selfish love for Leo , and their affair lasted for years . In later years Maud relied on friends , associates , and lovers to maintain her standard of living . She ultimately returned to the United States where , virtually penniless , she passed away at the age of 84 . THE SALOME DANCER is the fascinating story of her life and a record of her achievements offering insights into her amazingly talented and terribly troubled mind . -- ABOUT THE AUTHOR Felix Cherniavsky was born in Vancouver and received his B.A. and M.A. from McGill University and his Ph.D. from the University of Alberta .
