If the book hit the ' worst ' rather than the ' best ' seller list ( a ' fond illusion of my heart ' that kept me going for some three years ) one of many reasons is that , interesting a person and artist as she may have been , au fond Maud Allan was an unattractive member of the human race and who , other than specialists , really likes to read about such individuals ? That , perhaps , is a nice rationalization of an abandoned infatuation ! I shall certainly read The Sense of an Ending and Sexual Anarchy should the depleted University Library have either . Whether the Maud Allan material interests you , I would suppose the enclosed financial accounts of the Sybil Thorndike Tour will . Make use of them as you will . They come , of course , from the few extant papers of my uncles ' business records . If you conclude that Maud Allan and her Art deserves published review ( despite or , given the current trend , partly because of its format ) I would be enormously grateful . Critical notice of any kind is better than no notice of an effort that took much more than nine months to deliver . Please be sure to send me any published review , should any journal be interested . Since I assume that Joel Crotty would deposit somewhere in your University library the sketch that I mentioned in my letter to him , I enclose same . I trust he will understand . Thank you again for your review of The Salome Dancer . I wonder if you noticed in the text sly snippets from ( amongst others ) Wordsworth , Jane Austen , Bacon ?
