4 LETTERS NOW IN IT'S FOURTH PRINTING Your newsletters are really appreciated . I was especially touched by the last issue re : Isadora Duncan . I remember how thrilled I was as a youngster to see Isadora's adopted daughter and the group of dancers fly across the stage , banners flying , red chiffon tunics and bare feet rousing the audience , and especially the imagination to respond to Tchaikowsky's Overture of 1812 . It is a glorious memory . As time went on I studied with Martha Graham , performed and choreographed in the States , Mexico , Italy and in Canada , saw many recitals , attended numerous concerts , but never forgot the impact of that emotional experience . During the Depression I saw the paintings of Walkowitz , his rapid sketches of Isadora , and quite fell in love with his swift colourful renditions . I cashed in milk bottles and beer bottles and went money in hand to buy one of his sketches ( yes , I drank lots of milk in those days and some very nutritious beer ! ) . I also had the temerity to invite him to one of my recitals , at the close of which he gave me a charming little drawing of Isadora . These two sketches of Isadora , handsomely framed , face me today , a treasure for my children and grandchildren . Thanks for the memory ! Sara Lee Harris - Stadelman , Ottawa TODAY'S SMIRK Choreographer Danny Grossman states in his Foreword to Form Without Formula : " Trish Beatty is a realist in a magical field . She makes it seem quite possible to a shape a coherent dance of a maze of one's own feelings and concerns . I have been talking to her for years about my own dances . She understands the core of both craft and intuition and can zero in on essentials instantly . She sees the choreographer's personal challenge to bravely recycle old materials and structures in order to create new work and writes about this with sympathetic energy . " To quote William Littler : [ Form Without Formula is a ) distillation of a career's worth of experience and reflection by one of the pioneers of modern dance in Canada ... Dancers , choreographers , teachers and students will find this book both inspiring and provocative . As mentioned in the last Newsletter , we continue to receive baffling mail . The most recent oddity was sent to : " Lawrence and Miriam Adams Tourist Attractions " from High Fashion Knitting / Tricot Haute Mode Inc. , in Montreal . It contained a coloured brochure and price list for acrylic and wool toques , scarves , sweaters , mittens and slippers . Designed into these fashionably stated articles of warmth were names of some celebrated Canadian places : Quebec , Whistler , Whitehorse and Banff . Toque anyone ? And yet another , from Proshred Security : " If you are running out of space because of boxes of obsolete files whose retention periods have expired and are taking up your storage area , Proshred Security can help . Proshred Security can come to your premises and shred those unwanted files for you , efficiently and economically . It is the only fast , convenient and economical way for you to be sure they are truly destroyed . " So much for Canada's dance history . Dance Educators will find Form Without Formula a useful text in the classroom and an irreplaceable guide in the studio .
