The author presents a rather convincing case , claiming the terror and pain she suffered at the loss of her " dearly beloved brother was the cause of Maud's bizarre behavior throughout her life . I had trouble buying it . In tact there were many unanswered questions concerning the whole family and their relationships to each other . When I talked to Mr. Cherniavsky about my feelings , he asked me , " Did you not read between the lines ? " What about the family ? Cherniavsky paints a picture of a young man who stands totally emotionless , " confident in his innocence .
