LOOKING FOR A NEW SPEAKER OFFERING A CHOICE OF TOPICS DURING THE FIN DE SIECLE ? Felix Cherniavsky is the author of The Salome Dancer , the definitive biography of Maud Allan ( 1873-1956 ) , the pioneer classical dancer known as The Canadian Isadora Duncan , or " that other dancer from San Francisco , " where she spent such a happy youth . The Salome Dancer reveals the secret drama of Maud Allan's life : the trial , and in 1898 , the execution of her beloved brother Theo Durrant - for the murder of two young women in a Mission church . That tragedy , Cherniavsky maintains , permanently traumatized Maud Allan [ Durrant ) and motivated much of her dance repertoire in a career that briefly brought her world wide fame . For over 100 years the belief has endured that Adolph Sutro , Mayor of San Francisco during " The Crime of a Century , " as Randolph Hearst dubbed the affair , was the natural grandfather of Theo Durrant and his sister Maud . Drawing on extant Durrant documents in his care , Cherniavsky discusses this belief and argues that Sutro , in a fierce and secret battle with Randolph Hearst , was deeply involved in his grandson's defense . Felix Cherniavsky can speak on either or both of the Durrants . He supplements his talks with a wide range of audio / visual material . In the San Francisco Bay area , interested parties may obtain further information from Hamilton Barrett -- by dialing ( 415 ) 664 0957 , or they can phone Felix Cherniavsky directly in Edmonton , Alberta , Canada ( 403 ) 483-9308 Fax : ( 403 ) 484 6430. Agreements for Felix Cherniavsky to speak on a non - profit basis will be considered but confirmation is contingent upon the speaker's fee , travel and lodging expenses being covered by some other organization scheduling him within the same geographic area and time span . a Felix Cherniavsky is a graduate of McGill and the University of Alberta , where he completed his Ph.D. in English Literature . He has recently taken early retirement as a College professor . Apart from having published numerous journal articles , he is the author of : The Salome Dancer : The Life and Times of Maud Allan McClelland and Stewart Toronto 1991 , Maud Allan and Her Art : A Critical Compendium , 1903-1936 Dance Collection , Toronto 1991 The Crime of a Century : The Trial and Tribulations of Theo Durrant ( typescript )
