The play was written and directed by Brenda Lauth , who got the idea from a review of Philip Hoare's book , WILDE'S LAST STAND . We found the character of Maud Allan fascinating , but couldn't find much information about her . The review was in an English paper , and the book wasn't yet released in South Africa . Eventually a friend of mine sent me a copy from England , and with that , and the Kettle book , and a certain amount of artistic licence we wrote our play . Felix apparently saw our production advert on the Grahamstown National Arts Festival internet site ( this was where the play was premiered ) , and got in touch through the Grahamstown Foundation . Felix sent me a copy of his book , and ( I am relieved to say ) most of our assumptions about Maud were correct . He tells me that MAUD ALLAN AND HER ART has now been published . Needless to say South Africa is unlikely to obtain any of these for resale , but he suggested that I might be able to order a copy through you . We would never , under any circumstances use copyright material without permission in the play , but as an actress I can only say that ANY further information can only help in my characterisation of Maud , as well as provide a further source of endless fascination for myself ! I understand that you must be extremely busy , but if it is at all possible for you to let me know the cost of ordering a copy of the book ( including postage and packaging ) I would be extremely grateful . I suspect airmail postage would be best , I don't think my curiosity could survive surface mail - and in any case our South African postal system is rather erratic to say the least , thank God for e - mail ! If you would like any further information regarding VEIL OF DISGRACE I would be only too happy to oblige . My e - mail address listed above is a home address . Please excuse the informal nature of this letter . Best regards , Belinda Harward Printed for Dance Collection Danse < dancecol@web.net > 1
