SCREEN TEST Music : Tim Brady Libretto : John Sobol 2000 Subject of opera : the negative influence of the media on contemporary society and the question of personal integrity and iruth in our overly charged media landscape . The story ACT1 A somewhat mentally unbalanced young man known as the Preacher ( tenor ) wants to become famous on TV by founding a Media Death Cuit . To do this , he kidnaps a TV Reporter ( baritone ) and hides him in his sisters loft . She is a Dancer ( soprano ) working on a new piece based on the Salome myth , and she jealously guards her privacy The Preacher intends to kill the Reporter later , after he has made the Reporter record a feature interview with the Preacher , where he states his manifesto publically The Inspector ( baritone ) , in trying to find the kidnapped Reporter , questions the sister ( Dancer ) in her loft , where the Reporter is kept silent at the threat of knife point . Once the Inspector leaves , the Reporter does his interview and the Preacher leaves to give the videotape to the media . Acta On his way to the media he is arrested Ас 3 The Inspector interrogates Preacher , while the the Reporter interviews the Dancer The Preacher and the Reporter praise the power of the media while the Dancer and the Inspector are more concerned with personal integrity and authenticity . Seeing the Inspector's videotape the inspector finaily realises that the Reporter is being held at the Dancer's loft , and he rushes to free him . Meanwhile , the Dancer , in her persona as Salome , is arguing with the Reporter She does not want her taped interview to be aired and , as she goes to destroy the video camera with her sword , the Reporter lunges to save it and is beheaded The Inspector bursts in to discover the murder The opera is framed by a Prologue and an Epilogue , both of which are non narrantive in nature and which make use of elements of Cabaret theatre and TV talk shows and game shows in order to present the Characters of the play and the operas central themes .
