At the end of the second act of Pelleas and Melisande " Oscar Hammer . stein to - night announced from the stage of the Philadelphia Opera House that the perforinances already scheduled would be given . The Mayor will meet the commit . tee appointed by the Christian League to morrow , but it is not expected that he will interfere . Mr. Hammerstein sald : " I have adyertised ' Salome ' for Thurs day evening . I must keep my agreement concerning this modern masterpiece . " I respect the sentiments of the gentle . men of the church of any denomination . They are foremost in intelligence and culture in any community , and especially in this . But what am I to do ? I owe my audiences the productions I have promised . I owe the Church the respect that is its due . The clergy have requested me to withdraw ' Salome . ' and break my prom ise . This I cannot do .
