1 JOTTINGS Notes on Dancing from Maud Allan's Jottings ( circa 1939 ] Each child should have the opportunity to develop through music and movement , a perfect body , an enlightened spirit . To the ancient Greeks , Physical , Mental and Spiritual culture formed a balanced whole . Through rhythm a child can be given perfectly poised springs , a beautiful mind and spirit in absolute co - ordination . Verso : Bacchae of Euripides Bacchanale Beethoven's 5th Symphony Mozart Pure body of woman Great scientists poets and philosophers have cried out the above and " Oh woman , come before us , before our eyes longing for beauty , tired of the ugliness of this civilization , come in simple tunics , letting us see the line and harmony of the body beneath and dance for us . Dance us the sweetness of life and its meaning , dance for us the movements of birds , the waters , the waving trees , floating crowds , dance for us the holiness and beauty of woman's body . " The fountainhead for the Art of the dance will be the study of the movements of nature . One should dance spontaneously and give an expression of the individual soul , of its deepest understanding , personal power . This is what the dancer should offer the sculptor . Verso : The relation of the dance and the sculptor should be a very close one , from the unconscious movements of the little child to the more full , rhythmical and beautiful movements of the grown child , ever the source of light for sculptors . " We must seek the sweetness and beauty of the true dance , the joy of seeing the simple unconscious . A Child must not be taught to make movements , but her soul as it grows to maturity must be guided and instructed . In other words , the body must be taught to express itself by means of the motions natural to it . Movement , culture of the body is the aim of the gymnast - for the dancer they are only the means . The body itself must be forgotten , for it is only a harmonious and well adapted instrument whose movements express not only the movements of the body , as in gymnastics , but also the thoughts and feelings of the soul . The Art of the Dance . My ambition is to found the international School of the dance . Schools everywhere . Educators should try to understand the value of beautiful movement towards full and harmonious living . Unite in dancing the freedom of the human soul and the beauty of the human
