Eet - 5 1914 luod ARE WE BARBAROUS ? Sculptor on Dancing Ancient Anda Singapore Modern , fb5 1914 Straits Times Apropos the controversy on the propriety 3 in the of the tango , M. Rodin , the sculptor , has some interesting views in the Chronicle on dancing in general . " All I know about the tango , " he says , " is from pictures and photographs in the N newspapers , and that is not enough upon which to formulate an opinion . Some people say that it is a very old dance . If that is so , it may be very beautiful , but nowadays people generally transform dances into things that are horrible to see . I have often been to public balls and have seen young couples dance the polka and waltz very beautifully . Formerly I could not understand how dances could take a predominant place in the life of the ancients , but I changed my mind since I have seen some delightful specimens of exotic dances which have kept their ancient character . In certain countries a dance is a religious exercise and a retiox of the soul of the people . Many French people were much amused a few years ago when the ruler of Cambodia visited Paris accompanied by his troupe of girl dancers . People laughed when they learned that the King himself and bis daughters were managing a troupe of dancers , and that they considered it the most sacred and most important function in the kingdom . I saw them dance , and I must say it was simply a most delightful and most mar . vellous combination of gestures which people here could not understand , How barbarous we are ! "
