Aung tests from the PREACHES AGAINST DANCING . An Australian Clergyman Fiercely De nources These Who Do It - A Pro test . Against His Sermons . Heforeign Cort dspondence New YORK TIMES . 3 : 3 SYDNEY , July 5. - The Victorian colonists have been much stirred by an Anglican clergyman in one ' of the rural townships who has delivered from the pulpit a series of herce denunciations of ballrooms and those who frequent them . Although the preacher bears the name of Gladstone , he is no relation of the famous statesman , ' but the son of an Australian actor not altogether unknown on the American stage . In one of his sermons he said to his con gregation : In our own district there are many dances dur Ing the winter months , about every two or three weeks , and people give themselves up to it with characteristic brightness , Their i cry was that no harm would come to them . In nine cases out of ten no harm , perhaps , does come , but we are considering the tenth girl to - night , and with the eyes of God on her we want to show her the red danger signal of warning . We do not blame the young giris for going . as a price must be expected for their pleasure . You can tell her of one of these low dances in Nathalla . She does not realize the scorching tongue of slander , the physical danger . Why do the mothers not stop them ? They do when it is too late and their young lives are wrecked . They do not know the dangers they are exposing themselves to . They get up a dance at Barmah in aid of the ceme tery . See them returning from this ball , their vells perhaps torn and their hair all disheveled . They go ous bright and happy , and return_jaded . It is dancing with death as a partner . I have spoken to you plainly on the twin curses --- drink ing and dancing and as long a9 we have drink ing husbards we will have dancing women . The minister's sermons have invariably been received with unbecoming shouts of laughter . As he proceeded , however , his ut terances became of such a personal nature that actions or libel were threatened by some of his hearers . An appeal was made to the Bishop of the diocese , who declined to interfere . Ultimately a public meeting was held , at which the leading citizens of the district denounced the statements made by the reverend gentleman as " a tissue of vile falsehoods . " These remarks were in dorsed by , the local Magistrates , police on ficers , and other officials , who described the district depicted as a hotbed of vice by the fanatical preacher as one of the most de cent and orderly in the colonies .
