Russia December 1909 Between her closing performance at London's Palace Theatre in mid November and her departure on January 10 1910 for her maiden tour of the United States , Maud Allan made a two - city visit to Russia , dancing in St. Petersburg and , so she claimed Moscow . One of her motives in undertaking such an excursion , surely , was to match or even surpass the success of Isadora Duncan , who some years earlier had taken Russia - and a Russian- by storm . Blinded and exhausted by her conquest of London , Maud's debut in St. Petersburg was a critical calamity . She seems to have totally misjudged her audience , unwilling to tolerate anything but the best in modern or classical forms of the dance and , very possibly , of a performer from a London Variety Theatre . If this speculation is to any degree accurate , Maud must have fallen lamentably short of her most basic standards . Probably , too , she was overcome by stage fright at the prospect of satisfying so demanding an audience , of grappling with the all pervasive cult of Isadora Duncan . Such pressures might have paralysed her , conspired to make this " moment of truth " the nadir of her career . It certainly must have worried her confidence when she subsequently set sail for the United States . Note Since there is no record of her visit to Moscow , it is doubtful she ever went there ; maybe she planned to go , but after her reception in St. Petersburg , got cold feet . . is
