Ini scur ss Blectra was written long before . reason Strauss wrote his Salome - miraculously sung some years ago in London by Welitsch . ( You can still hear the records . ) But this might once more have been an instance when Maud was proclaiming something to be true wh was in fact fantasy - So often indulged in in the last years . Rolinct Manya always giggled when we spoke of my departure from Los Angeles . I had actually stayed on because I'd written a film script ( not bad on re - reading it ) wh I hoped Jimmy Whale wd produce . ( He had directed . Show Boat , The Invisible Man and heaven alone knows what else . ) When I left it was because I had dates in Austria , Holland , and England wh I naturally had to fulfil - though dear Maud thought I cld chuck these for some astronomical sum to be earned amongst the film crooks . ( She always visualised LARGE sums as indeed did Isadora too . But I can't imagine they were much alike . Doris Langley's summing - up and comparison of the two is probably dead right . ) the enchanting day spent with a faceulo ab Vence when he as polares " cello sonatas I still cuenta with polo to our hearts content Incidentally the last time she was in England before West Wing was half smashed by bombs my darling wife helped her time without number . In the end we felt there was little more we cld do except give her the cash she needed to get back to California with some over to live on for a few months . I wrote to her several times c / o Mrs Millard at Pasadena but never heard again from her . I knew nothing of that accident , NOR did I know anything - as I've probably already told you - abt the brother . Was he guilty ? It was after all only circumstantial evidence and no jury here wd sentence a man on so little actual evidence . ere You see how much I scribble to you proving how much I have been held and interested in this first full account I've now read . If I waited so long to write again to old friends like Manya in the USA six years of War and afterwards my planning the new Third Programme and other work is the reason : in short I was too busy to write letters or keep up old contacts . But with the real ones one always immediately takes up again from where one left off . All that is left for me to say to you is that I so most deeply hope yr book will find an excellent publisher and bring you the success it merits . Is ever sincudy , Stienne Amyot 22 June zond 1988 . (
