2 from the studio of Popper , the veteran star cellist . It is because these rare preliminary conditions of the finest family instruction have been followed by the devotion of the greatest living artists to the encouragement of such conspiuous child - talent that the Cherniavskys may be admired , and their playing enjoyed , with a whole heartedness which we deny to that rather wearisome invader of the concert room , the ' child prodigy ' struggling with something he or she cannot quite do . That is why the frequent recalls , the enthusiastic encores , and at the end the loud cheering of the very large audienece on Saturday were all justified . Connoisseurs and the general . public were equally astonished and delighted for different reasons and " all went merry as a marriage bell . " Taking the new artists on the principal of ' seniores , priores , ' Leo's chief contribution to the program was the first part of the Tchaikovsky violin concerto . In the Mendelssohn D major trio with which the concert opened , this player had shown the higher and rarer aspect of his art in a reading marked by sympathetic insight and delicacy . In the Russian concerto , on the other hand , necessarily somewhat forcing the tone ( a troublee he will overcome in a few years ) he gave a truly marvelous rendering of the bravura movement The beautiful opening theme , with its leaping phrases , was played with true . feeling for the music , and his listeners were quite unprepared for the incisive mastery he exhibited in the tremendous unaccompanied cadenza , with its rapid chromatic chords , highest harmonics and double stops , which is a . feature of the work . The encore , a French minuet , was interpreted with vivacity and grace . Jan's style as a pianist has already been described , . In the Trio he was a little too heavy and assertive , but he had free scope in his solo ( Liszt / Verdi . Rigoletto ) in which he exhibited a splendid executive power united with sparkling lightness ! of touch . Similar recalls of enthusiasm led to a charming rendering of Chopin's " Valse in D Flat . " Little Mischel is at the exact age at which Jean Gerardy made his first public debut in England , when he appeared at Nottingham with .. Paderweski and Ysaye on the same platform . Mischel is also likely to earn the title of the " Sarasate of the Violoncello . " In a Liszt " Hungarian Rhapsody " the boy's technical accuracy in passages of alarming difficulty baffled description . The little player had apparently perfect command of the instrument , and ran from the deepest bass . to the lightest piccolo ' tones in every form of double stopping that the ingenuity of Popper ( who has transcribed Liszt's music for the cello ) could invent . Loud cheers led to the addition of the familiar Popper " Gavotte . " Madame Marie Hooton , who has not been heard here for som years , was cordially recognised .... Mr. :: Percival Driver , an English baritone with a voice of great resonance , but an occasionally harsh quality .... [ at this point my eyes give out ../ .. ] Mr. Brascombe announces the final concerts of the season for to - morrow , Thursday , and Saturday next .
