OCTOBER 26 1908 Although the press notices and the public sensation in the sister capital had a bsolutely assured Saturday's audience at the Town Halli against the possibility of disappointment , it must be admitted that such fine playing , such a union of the artistic temperament with the most advanced virtuoso technique , had not been anticipated by those who attended the first Cherniavsky concert . It is possible to describe the concert in terms of praise , and to proclaim it marvelous , but actual hearing alone will ! convince the average sceptic , wearied by the brilliant imperfections of local child - wonders , that a youth of seventeen , a boy of 12 and a small child of eleven can produce the perfect artistic results which electrified every listener on Saturday . The opening Cherniavsky concert represented indeed a memorably enjoyable evening . " The only other family of similar talent that has visited Australia began their acquaintance with this country at a bout the same age as the eldest of the Cherniavskys . At his debut here in 1895 Mark Hambourg was 16 years of age , which was the age of his brother Jakoff ( violinist ) when he returned with him in 1897 and also the age of the ' cellist Boris as the star pianist's third visit in 1898. The comparison enables us to say definitely that Leo Cherniavsky , the new violinist , is head and shoulders above Jakoff at much the same age , whilst the little Mischel is so much in advance of the Boris of 1903 that he must certainly prove of the world's greatest players , provided that he studies hard and remains : morally steady [ ? ] . Whether Jan is to prove a second Mark Hambourg remains to be seen , but already he is a little artist of the same exuberant brilliancy- a captivating little piano banger of the same school :! Mark was three years older than Jan when Sydney audiences first heard him , and he had spent that three years after touring England from the age of 11 to 13 , in arduous study in Vienna at the Leschetitzky . school . : No doubt the rise of such musical families as these two from Russia occurs only under exceptionally favorable circumstances . Professor Michael Hambourg was Director of the Imperial Conservatorium at Veronbach [ ? ] in South . Russia . Abram directed Italian opera and symphony orchestra in Odessa . The mothers in both families were intensely musical , and in both cases the children not only breathed a musical atmosphere from infancy . but received technical instruction in the art at the earliest possible moment , and were ultimately " finished " [ !!! ] bu virtuosi of world renown . This wisely considered course must have represented the equivalent of thousands spent upon art education - and how often is this possible ?
