April 1 1909 SMH The Cherniavskys closed their season at the Palace Theatre with matinee and evening concerts . On the latter occasion the brilliant Russian trio enjoyed an enthusiastic send - off at the hands of a large and appreciative audience . It is not usual to give EIGHT consecutive concerts of classical and romantic music and in London , with its vast population , the procedure is unknown . Entrepreneurs have many difficulties to encounter on this side of the world , however , and Mr. Edward Branscombe probably had no choice in the matter . The efforts of Mme . Hooton and Mr. Driver were also warmly recognized , giving promise of a hearty welcome for the party should they ever return here . The Cherniavsky group will now give one concert at Goulburn on their way to Melbourne QUEENS HALL SMH March 29 1909 SMH This week will be the concluding performace of Miss Freda Cuthburt , who has been attracting large audiences for some time past . On Saturday a full house gave a good reception to the artist on her unique Salome Dance . In addition to this item was a new programme of moving pictures . Among the spectacular numbers was " Life on board the Bretagne , and " Hungary . " Comic projections were well in evidence , and peals of laughter rewarded the picture of " Algy Earns His Living , " " The Toy Soldier , " and " Weary Willie at the Carnival . " Colour photography is well represented in the beautiful " Fairies ' Present . " Matinees are annou ced for the coming week C Advertisements for The Salome Dance at Queens Hall on original xerox , but note especially publicised as THE CRAZE OF THE WORLD .. Thhese advertisements were , by accident , adjoining those of the trio . The point is that when Maud Allan proposed the tour , the trio may have known that " The Salome Dance " hads been well received in Australia , and figured thaat as the ' original ' Salome , Maud would be a big attraction . They were correct ; every time she danced this work , receipts went up 40 % . In 1908 there were , so the NY Times even reported , over 200 would be Salomes in the dives , taverns and halls of the US , ali imitating or inspired by Maud's " Vision of Salome . " It's remarkable that even in Australia Salome was a best seller in 1909 . Note also : in 1909 the Trio's repertoire included : Peer Gynt Suite ; Marche Funebre ( Trio ) and Spring Song . All three of these items were also part of Maud's repertoire in 1908-9 when she made her conquest of London . The Trio did NOT ' learn ' these works at Maud's request ; they were already part of the Trio's repertoire . Maud responded to the trio's interpretation , not vice versa . Quite remarkable when you think about it . This is of particular interest to me of course .
