Sydney Morning Herald [ SMH ] 25 March 1909 : OPENING CONCERT . The intense silence in which the items of the concert given last night [ at the Palace Theatre ) by the Cherniavsky party was even a higher tribute of appreciation than the enthusiastic applause which broke out at the conclusion of each number . The theatre was well attended , a large proportion of the audience being professional musicians and students . Approval expressed by such a gathering necessarily stamped the performers as artists of high talent . The youth of the three Russian lads was sufficent to awaken interest ; but their initial number , a trio , Allegro , Adagio , Allegro Molto by J. E. Bache , showed that natural talent and study had compensated for lack of years and had placed these boys in the forefront of instrumentalists . No less pleasing were their solo numbers . Mischel Cherniavsky's rendering of the first movement of Golterman's second Concerto , Jan's performance of Liszt's brilliant sixth Rhapsody and Leo Cherniavsky's interpretation of Ernst's violin concerto ( opus 23 ) were all very warmly encored , and the concluding Trio - Cantabile ( Widor ) and German Dance ( Schubert ) - made so favourable an impression on the hearers that the young artists were again compelled to bow their acknowledgments . The assisting artists were Mme . Marie Hooton and Mr. Percival Driver . The former sang an old Devonshire song and the German " Still wie der nacht , " with the same sweet voice that she brought to Sydney five years ago . Both numbers were encored , and Madame Hooton was the recipient of beautiful flower tributes . Mr. Driver , who is a young English baritone , made a favorable impression with Handel's " Si tra i aart [ ? ] illegible ... Three more concerts will be given this week . SMH Monday March 1909 The three members of the talented Cherniavsky family gave a concert on Saturday night , presenting a program in which the severely classical and the lyric were blended in the instrumental parts , and ballad music in the vocal . The programme as presented was not long , but with the inevitable encores which followed nearly every item , it was long enough . Mischel Cherniavsky , who played the ' cello , perhaps carried off the honours of the evening . He took part in all concerted pieces , but his greatest success was in " the Swan , " and " Am Springbrunnen . " For the last he received not only an imperative recall , but a liberal meed of applause as well . Jan Cherniavsky , whose speciality is the piano , also shone at his work ; and Leo , the violinist , received liberal appreciation and applause as well as recalls . Mme . Marie Hooton rendered a couple of songs , and Mr. Percival Driver also appeared in vocal numbers . Each received the usual acknowledgements from the audience .
