The stately Beethoven music was played superbly , and in the encore numbers the datatiness of touch of the player was exhibited in " Gavotte " ( Stevenhagen ) and " Preludo " ( Chopin ) . Four varying puniber3 for the tottur made up Lea's onering , but on demand the list was extended , embracing " Pale Moon " ( Logan - Kreisler ) , " From the Caul . brake " ( Gardner ) , Mazurka No. 2 , Op . 33 ( Chopin - Kreisler ) , " Polonaise " ( Wieniawskl ) , and “ Bercouse " ( Townsend ) . An impressively devotional arrangement of “ Ave Maria " ( Bach Gounod ) brought the trio together again for the concluding number . This was supple mented by " Slave Dance " ( Dvorak ) , and by way of an encore “ At the Brook " ( Boistettfe ) . Aren sky's Trio , which had been chosen to open the night's programme , presented grateful opportunity for the display of the efficiency and range of their concerted work , and Blegia and Finale were especially well received . TO the exacting “ Kol Nidrel " ( Bruch ) , and the dreamy and exquisitely - played " Hungarian Rhapsodie " of Popper Mischel Cherniavsky added a violoncello solo of his own composi tion , which called for a deal of intricate bandling and rapid bowing , from which test the applause of the crowded house showed that the emerged successfully . Jan's omcial offerings were confined to three selections from his favourite , Chopin : The " Nocturne in F Sharp Major , " " Mazurka , " and the " Scherso io B Flat Minor , " which last was played with a cerve and a sympathy that necessitated vari ous extra numbers . Leo bad been set down to play Ernst's Violin Concerto , but his execution of Tartini's " Devil's Trill " at previa ous concerts bad created & demand for the lattor Those who were hearing it for the Orst - time joined in the earlier verdict , and recalled the violinist , who was content to display his versatility by mutod trifles .
