Australian CALL FOR Star 6 handkerchief along for the net WEEK UFO . Apul 1709 با 2 THE CHERNIAVSKIS act laos FIRST CONCERT P.3 q 0 Sydney Palace is the quick - change theatre of the Ma State's capital . The clever Cherniavs trio finish their season on Wednesday , March 34 the Dudley Dramatic Co. skips on for Thursday and Friday nights to play a four - act comedy by Jas . L. Goodman , entitled “ A Secret Wedding " ; and on Saturday , April 3 , Allan Hamilton's co takes the stage with Queen of the Night , " described by the advertisement as " a romantic , sensational drama of exceptional power and in terest . " The advt . also asserts that it has been running throughout England and America for the past four years , so presumably it is one of the favorite heart - wringers of the Old World . At time of writing , the Cherniavskis have two con certs to play through before their lease runs out and the gas is turned off at the meter . It seems an injustice to describe as a wonder - child the eldest of the three , who is a fairly tall young man in grown - up garments ; still , it is a long way round the earth , and manhood may have stolen un a wares on the young musician while the journey was yet incomplete . Mischel , the serious man - child who weaves music - dreams with his ' cello and his bow , is the finest artist of the three ; but then he is at least 5000 years older than the other two . As he plays , his face wears the calm , wise look of an ancient harper , and his grave acknowledgment of the applause seems to say : " No , it isn't at all wonderful . I was merely thinking of a little ex perience of mine several lives ago . Leo has the advantage of Jan in years and experience ; but both of them follow behind their small , elderly brother . Mrs. Marie Hooton and Percival Driver , the two singers of the co . , provide valuable sup port for the three boys . a 32 TES is one of the best . Punch The Cherniavski Brothers opened their Sydney season with a first - rate audience at the Town Hall on Saturday . Little Mischel , the ' cellist , was the hero of the evening . Berza 19 9 05 I On Saturday night the Town Hall was well filled at the opening concert of the Cherniavski Brothers . The audience was wonder - struck at the accomplishment of these young players . Leo Cherniavski , is by far the most artistic of the trio . He has splendid technique , a pure melodious into nation , and a thorough knowledge of his in strument , Tschaikowsky's " Violin Concer to " avas his masterpiece . His brilliant tech nique is here given loose rein . Leo reminds one of Kubelik , with this incomparable exe cution . Expression is his strong point . This was rather unfortunate , for in such a huge building the sound was sometimes lost . AS an encore number an old French " Gavotte , tripping and softly colored , was given . The audience , which went to make comparisons and be lenient , were delighted . Jan Cherniavski , the pianist , has a firm , masterful touch , and negotiated Liszt's dif ficult " Rigoletto " with well - judged pre cision . From the heavy bass octave lead right through the subject , with its intricate ornamentation , and on to the flashing oC tave finale , the young genius was full of confidence . Though extraordinarily gifted , he has , from an artistic point of view , much to learn . His technical knowledge and memory are well nigh faultless , but he lacks the refinement and polish which only ex perience can give . With all his thunder , there is no sign of coarse or cheap work . His items were well chosen and meritori ous to a degree . He was loudly recalled , and for the encore presented Chopin's melodiou's " Valse in D Flat . " The ' cellist is Mischel , who has the distine tion of being the youngest of the perform ers . He manages his instrument with a power that is surprising . For his first item Popper's " Hungarian Rhapsody ” was pre sented . In the finer parts he , like his elder brother , was lost in space . His quick pas * sages , though cloudy , show him to be pos sessed of versatility and resource . In the slow movement his notes were sonorous and full - toned ; while the sharp ' staccato finale was vivacious and forceful . Popper evi dently had an apt pupil , and , with experi ence , Mischel should develop into something phenomenal . As an encore he gave a " Ga votte " by the same composer . One of the best instrumental items on the programme was Mendelssohn's " D Major Trio , " by the three brothers . The vivid first movement , with its recurring theme , the expressive andante movement , and the strenuous concluding allegro were of ex quisite workmanship . Widor's “ Serenade " and Grieg's " Norwegian Dance No. 2 " were other concerted numbers . Mr. Percival Driver is the possessor of a strong baritone voice of medium range and quality . His articulation is not clear , but in rollicking songs , such as " Song of the Bow " ( Florence Aylward ) , and " Simon the Cellarer ” he acquitted himself with con siderable credit . " Egyptian Love Song ( Airlie Dix ) did not altogether suit him , while Beeazee " to which he himself sup plied the pianoforte accompaniment , was an even less happy choice . Russian Love Song ( Stutzmann ) was Madame Marie Hooton's first item . Her articulation is remarkably clear , and her tone generously rounded . Her songs were of the old school , and the audience recalled her each time . " The Ashgrove " -an old Welsh melody - and a 17th century Devon shire song , " Jan's Courtship , " were well re ceived . The second concert is fixed for to - morrow ( Tuesday ) . Sydney Mail NGU4 1908 The Cherniavskis further delighted their hearers at the Town Hall on Thursday and Saturday evenings . The impression left by these wonderfully gifted youths is that they are already rare artists , destined to rise to the very highest places in their profession . Those who have heard their exquisite play ing will always recall it with pleasure . The remarkable demonstration of enthusiasm that attended each of their performances showed very plainly how warmly they were ap preciated . THE CHERNIAVSKI . SEASON Austrachan stan The second of the concerts by the gifted Cherniavski brothers is fixed for to - night , at the Town Hall . The opening item will be a Haydn trio - one of singular beauty . The violinist , Leo , is listed for a Wieniawski fantasia , while Lizst's * Hungarian Rhap sody " ( No. 13 ) will be interpreted by Jan ( the pianist ) . A violoncello concerto by Gotterwaun will be Mischel's first item . Ma . dame Marie Hooton and Mr. Percival Driver will give some interesting vocal items . The box plan is at Paling's . 27oet 1908 i P.2
