Sydney The Theatre Sept 1 ) . 9 Thi Theatre Juhl MERELY A FREAK DANCER . L Mand Allan , supported by Leo . Jan , and Mischel Cherniavsky , will open at the Palace ( Sydney ) on Saturday , July 4. The season is lim ited to six performances . The prin . cipals will have the support of an orchestra of thirty - five professional musicians , under the conductorship of Frank St. Leger . Miss Allan's season is under the direction of Wi liam Anderson , by arrangement with W. Angus McLeon , and with Howard Edie as manager . 9 - sichore " has a few words to say : Maud Allan's Sydney season , early in July , closed down very abruptly . The advertised explanation was that she had injured her ankle . Side by side with this is the fact that she was appearing to rather sparse audiences . To the writer Miss Allan was very disappoint ing . She undertakes to " plıysically ex . press " the meaning of certain pieces of musie . Everyone knows that " The Blue Danube " is an unbroken , Joyous . Aen . cuous thrill from the free note to the last . Yet in this Miss Allan introduces expressions varying from fear to Joy ! In view of this treatment of a simple theme one feels that he is Justined in his conclusion that much of her work in music of a complex character is quite meaningless . Miss Aslan hasn't any great beauty in her favor , nor are her dancing movements in any degree grace ful -- that is , judged from a high - class dancing standard . ller work could well be compressed into a vaudeville turn . Even then the success of it would be along freak lines . ) 4 May ! Fashiong him 1 Maud Allan says that she “ visual . ises the emotional quality of music . " The late Pelissier of " The Follies " visualised her for me at the Apollo , London . I always re gretted not seeing her before I saw Pelissier , as it was impossible for anyone with a ribald mind to be . come attuned to her art after . 1 ave The Theatre et Somehow to feel that I owe Pelissier 4 The Cherniavskye . There is much merit in the work of the Cherniarskys . but they happen to here come to Australia at a time when other greater stars are here , and they naturally suffer through the inevitable a for this 9 comparison . Ten , the violinist , is the eldest of the trio , and is twenty - three years of age ; Jan , the planist , is nine teen : and Mischel . the " cellist , is eighteen . They are not the only musi cians in their family . An elder brother , Gregor . has occupled a position as a Professor at the St. Petersburg Cop servatoire for some years , and two sis . ter have shown signs of remarkable talent . The three boys who have just risited Sydney with Maud Allan were born at linan . near Odenan , and their original musical training from their father , a distinguished con duetar , and their brother Gregor . When they left Russia Leo went to Yeaye for nine months : Jan had lessons from the famous Leschetizky for a year : and Mischel received instruction from David Popper . the celebrated ' cellist , who died not long since . The three boys possess individunlity ; but they still want polish -quality which they should acquire , for they have youth on their side . During the month readers of the emotional newspapers have gleaned some weird theatrical information . Mischa Elman's hands are insured . so are the digits of the Cherniavsky brothers , and the feet of Maud Allan . I have a special bit of in . telligence on the same subject . Muriel Starr , who acts from the heart , has insured that organ . She has an insurance policy which stipulates payment of several thousands of dollars to her heirs , a executors , and assigns when her heart stops beating . I have similar policy .
