4 risen from the water to frolic with the land children , whom she leaves with reluctance , but sinks back into the water to rejoin her sister nymphs . Arrayed in white , with flowing hair , with arms and legs bare , Miss Allan floated over the stage like a veritable fairy in a dance as musical as the strains of the unseen orchestra . Girlish in the complete abadonment of her movements , she indulged in pretty runs and circles , sinking into the water at last like a lily folding itself to sleep . On being recalled Miss Allan , with her head swathed in an oriental scarf , interpreted with marvellous clearness the spirit and the world of Offenbachºs fascinating Bacarolle , the music of which flwoed with indescribable sweetness from the concealed instruments . Dor " The Vision of Salome " the stage was converted into a palace chamber with heavy columns and beyond , tall , dark cypresses , the gloomy interior being made only less dark by censers burning in tall standars . The effect was heightened by the fact that while the overture was played , a bloodred curtainthrough which the the glow of the cressets showed dimly , hid the stage from view . Ancient Hebrew melodies , solemn and weird , are the themes played . Salome has danced off the head of the Baptist , prior to the vision appearing , and in the dance her emotions of triumph and remorse are commingled . Her dress was compo ksed of strings of rich beads hanging from the waist , and rich Eastern embroideries on the upper part of her body . She stood for a while the steps at the rear of the hall , and then advanced to the center of a scene lurid with flame and smoke . In the midst of her triumphant dance the grim and ghastly head of the Baptist is suddenly thrust into her hands , and the horror of it takes possession of her mind . Now she flings off the feeling . Again she's cowering almost in worship before the terrible spectre , and when it disappears there is a fear , like that of Lady Macbeth , of the blood on her hands . Snakelike , on C
