Mies Maud Allan , the world - famed dancer , and the talented Cherniavsky Brothers ( Leo , Jad , and Mischel ) appeared in the Mechanics ' Hall on Thursday evening to almost full house . Vios Allan was embodiment of grace , and the Russian instrumentalists played like the great artists they are . Maud Allan is not a dancer in the ordinary sense of the " term . Her feet play but a minor role , not nearly so important a one as her hands and arms . She is the personification of the spirit of music . She poses , postures , yields to joyous abandon , be comes abased , expresses every mood , and in all is as graceful as grace itself . Her facial ex pression is a revelation . On her first appear ance she interpreted four dance poems ( sorrow , despair , hope , and joy ) to music by Chopin four preludes , Op . 28. For her next nu ber S ; OR 1 ANI the musio was from Chopin's Funeral Matthie * 4 $$ a . A Railroad Engineer " Lovely Lubin Drama . Sophie of the Films in the Lion's Den ” Screaming Comedy . To - night , Dec cl Maud Allan , At 8.15 p.m. The World's Greatest Classic Dancer , And d et eduli Leo , Jan , & Mischel Cherniavsky and . ärst , Miss Allan conceives the grief voiced by the composer as inspired by the sight of a broken - hearted woman wandering about battlefield searching for the bodies of those she loved . The conception was finely inter preted . The Norwegian dance was a beautiful exposition of graceful movement , and delighted everybody . This was the only occasion which the dancer acknowledged the encore by more than boy . “ Mendelssohn's Spring Song ' was added , and was another fine pre sentation of the beauty of motion . Her final number was " The Vision of Salome , " first given by Miss Allan at the Royal Opera House , Vienna , in 1906 . The music is by Marcel Remy , who employed ancient Hebrew themes . The dance is a weird exhibition , won derfully effective , and there is a touch of the gruesome when the head is produced . Sinuous contortions were frequent in this exposition , and the tragic mood was finely depicted . The stage drapings and costumes were most artistic , but in some of the dances the effect would be enhanced by an umbrageous setting . The accom penying music , by the Cherniavsky Brothers , was perfect . The brothers played one trio Mendelssohn's in D minor -- ( a ) allegro energico , ( b ) andante con moto tranquillo , ( c ) allegro . The number was superbly given . The finale to the second movement was particularly cap tivating , and the third movement was a musical treat . Msenel bracketed for his ' cello solo ( a ) " Vito " ( Popper ) and ( b ) “ Arlequin " ( the same composer ) . We doubt if a finer in strumental performance was ever heard in this city . The player gets effects which one would think would only be possible a execution is masterly . encore thusiastic , and a fascinating rendering of Schubert's “ Slumber Song ' was given . Jan , the pianist , took the house by storm . His technique is marvelloushe has a touch that is superb . His contributions were - Schutt's reverie , Chopin's valse in G Fiat , Chopin's pre lude in F , and Goddard's mazurka . The violinist shared in the triumphs of the eveni ing , and deservedly His execution in Schubert - Wilhelmj's “ Ave Maria " and Sarasate's “ Spanish Dance " was magnificent . Pine double stopping was a characteristic of the former , and the pizzicato work in the lac ter ma swonderful . To meet the encore Drdla's serenade was added , and was played with a wealth of expression . Mr. Frank St. Leger ac companied the soloists , and proved himself a ne player . Violinist , Pianist and ' Cellist . IN N the Artistic . History of the Twen tieth Century , Maud Allar's “ VISION OF SALOME " The Winbone violin .
