South Africa 19 11 Pretoria , South Africa Pretoria News ( December 24 1911 ) Maud Allan gave five performances in Pretoria , South Africa between December 20 1911 and January 2 1912. She was 1 assisted by her old school friend " Alice Lonnon ( stories ) . " The Pretoria News appreciated her as an incomparable dancer , but a wonderful actress . She gripped the audience from the moment she crept in a slight , shrinking white figure against the massive dull grey curtains that formed the background , to interpret Chopin's Valse . in A Flat . The audience was held spellbound as the artist erup gave her reading of Chopin's meaning . . Her illustration aleserah to or of Chopin's Mazurka was arresting in the extreme . Splendid , too , was her illustration of the Nocture in F_sharpe that beautiful composition that breathes of a moonlight night and of lovers ' happy sighs .
