perfora ANCE . April MUD ALLAN SALOME Maud Allan Again Accorded an Cvation SF Examiner Hundreds Turned Away From Articstically Grewsome and Faithful to the Meanings fof the Composer Š xamine March March Apr 1910 April 1910 Princess Unable to Crowd in to See Danger И | i By Thomas Nunan Maud Allan danced Jais last night at the Princess Theatre and she re ceived as great an ovation as on Thurs. day evening The house , which had been sold out two days in advance , was thronged to its greatest capacity packed to the doors . Hundreds of peo . ple were turned away , and on account of the great demand return per formance will probably be given al the Valeria Theatre on Saturderer next week , with the Salome dance in uued . 23-8-9 - a April 14-16 Last night's programme was athost entirely a new An specially notable number was Chopin's brated funeral march the dremelody of musical people in all lands . third movement of the beautiful Sonata in B Mat Minor was of all composi tions , never intended to be danced It is the most slow and solemn of marches , and surpasses all other com . positions in deep innereal character Miss Allan Interreted it in the ut most mournfulness of rhythm invest ing the almost acred composition with added meaning and dignity in stead of taking anything away from it | She carried the rhyther arms principally are the expression By Thomas Nunan Grewsome is the story and grewsome the music interpreted by Maud Allan in her " Vision of Salome dance , and had last night's performance at the Valencia theatre lacked this character . istic would be justified in com plaining that the Salome meanings were incorrectly interpreted . But there is no such occasion for criticism . The art was superlative . Miss Allan was not the originator of story , music OT dance , and she earnestly wisher to avoid the per formance in her home city , preferring to leave here only the memory of her beautiful interpretation of beautiful music , but the Salome dance was de manded of her by her managers be cause we demanded it of them . And how we did pack the big Valen cia Theatre on one of the hottest nights in the year when our demand was respected ! There no vulgarity about tha dance . Miss Allan was not like other Salomes . So artistically was her dance performed that it seemed to ma as perfectly moral as a surgical opera tion , but it was all that Strauss in tended the music to be - al that Paul Steindorff intended his interpretation of the music to be An excellent stage setting was given to the dance The music was skillfully rendered Miss Allan was garbed in the conventional Salome costume ; an unconventional costume , if you pre fer to speak of it that way . The rhythmic motions true to the music , intensifying it and bringing out the unpleasant meanings in silent elo Quence There was no escape for the imagination When the uncanny head appeared . And Miss Allan , faith ful to the art that was required of her , performed intense realism through all the story that is far from pleasant even in the reading . If we are sufficiently devoted to art we may applaud Miss Allan's " Salome " dance : for artistic it certainly is . But I feel like goins back to the surgical simile and saying that the operation was highly successful There some shock , but we will survive . The rest of the programme was ex + quisite , with every number worth hundred Salome dances . It included the " Peer Gynt " suite , by Grieg , and the " Blue Danube yaltz , with the Mendelssohn " Spring Song and Tschaikovsky's " Dause des Merlitons " en COLO WS ber numbers Tie Tschaikowski Dante des Merllons , the Rubinstein Melody in and the Chopin Mamurka in sharp Minor were exceedingly bright and effective , The next performance will be given on Sunday afternoon . After which the dancer will immediately start for Los Angeles Now , when Miss Allan performs the Salome dance for an ancisco next Saturday . I shall expect to see her take our thoughts to conception hixher than that which the general public holds of the work . It may be that in his loftv sanne Richard Strauss in . tended something better for the dance than the idea which ordiners perform ere hare given a commonplate dancer could have shocked us with the Chopin funeral mareh . Possibly Maud Alina can in extent free the Strauss work from its existing reputa tion , though it is asking treat neal of her art DESH BLIR HAR BURGLAR
