10 i francisco EXAMINER Thursday April !! , MAUD ALLAN TALKS ON ART OF DANCING Last Notes of Grand Opera Grace George Wire Follow TO --- -OT In Onion - Skin Colored Gown and Picturesque Hat She Addresses Music Club , O Maud Allan , the dancer , lost a mesh purse containing $ 50 yesterday . Whether it was stolen or not she did not know , she told the police . The Joss occurred while she was automobile , going from Pine and San some streets to the St. Francis Hotel . Miss Allan made her debut as public speaker Yesterday before the Wednesday Morning Musical Club , sev eral hundred members of which re . ceived her with applause approximat . ing acclamations of bewildering eno . tionalism . Indrawn exclamations of " 0-0-0-1 mingled with demonstra tions of applause , greeted her as , with clinging draperies falling about her sandals of satin , Miss Allan glided on to the stage . In the interval of the applause , the of the audience devoured Miss Allan , a buzz of whispers commenting on her appearance in street attire . Her gown of Almy veiling , the color of a dried onion skin , made in flowing lines which doubtless would have met the approval of a fashionable modiste of the time of Aspasia , clung to her slen der , lissome figure with artless grace . Not a vestige of modernity was any where apparent , except possibly the immense Gainsborough hat of black straw which drooped over her grayish blonde hair like the corolla ot a fior er . A dark coat , slightly resembling a kimono , the blackish - brown color of upturned earth , was Worn Son . The blue embroidery in turned - back ' portion of the coat ac centuated the ochre tints of the town . Tlye ensemble Was fastidiously har . monious . * The first music originated out of thoughts inexpressibie hrough medium of words alone . It sprang out of the movements of the body and soul , acting in unison on the impulse some great emotional intensity . " spoke Miss Allan in a voice of girlish softness . " Now music is vibration . Vibration is movement . This movement is sound . Music is audible movement . Dancing is visible movement , in rhythm to these vibrations , continued Miss Allan in an effort to explain the relation between dancing and music , telling the aut ence just why she was convinced that her dances were a truthful interpre tation of the musical themes to which she danced . Following her talk dancing , Miss Allan gave a carefully diplomatic dissertation against woman suffrage , reading her views out of a gilt - edged book which she explained was printed for private circulation , and which she had written views on current topics . Miss Allan's talk followed a delight ful programme of music . Grace George , who will appear at the Columbia reat - reek , “ A Woman's Way , ” Domestic Love Play , to Be Next Columbia Offering .
