54 London . She paid for the conquest because she could never forget it ; as an artist , she was unable to adjust to the times when luck was no longer her guardian angel . In the opinion of so many who knew her well , she was an artist to her fingertips , a dancer by default . Some 25 years after her conquest Maud supervised the writing of " Two Years in the Life of an Edwardian [ corrected in her script to ' Great ' ] Dancer , " prepared by Verna Aldrich , her secretary / companion of the day . The following paragraph from this typescript summarizes Maud Allan's retrospective view of her significance in Dance History . The validity of her view may well be disputed ; but its clarity cannot be doubted . She merely opened the door for popular appreciation of that which had been foolishly closed before . Civilization was ready for greater sincerity . Hypocrisy , at least in art , was waiting to be killed . As fahas dancing is concerned , Isadora Duncan revived barefoot dancing , but was otherwise most clothed , and the moral side of her art found itself under a vague Greek tradition which in her was not naughty but formed both a reason and an excuse for anything that appeared novel in it . There was nothing in Isadora's art which corresponded to the Salome dance , which challenged artistic ideals , religeous beliefs or moral prejudices in the same way .
