DE BUT PERFORMQNCE OF THE VISION OF SALOME Critique from Neues Wiener Journal Dec 29 1906 N.B. Mata Hari at the Apollo , Ruth St , Denis at the Ronacher 作 ... and not all these female dance reformers can dance . ... Now Maud Allan is supposed to show her art on Sunday and Tuesday afternoon , in the Carl Theatre . The topic is The Vision of Salome . " First , there's old Arab music mixed with Hebrew mwelodies . Then the curtain raises and the lights illuminate the whole thapeXX scene in which the ( female ) danceri appears . Phsically she shows a magnificent picture of Salome . Her body is slim , flexible . A wonderfully shaped sle der head with b ; ack hair , around which strings of pearls are bound . Blue grey etes , which glisten moix . The upper body was naked and white , strands of pearls withgxx gems cover almost all of it . The back delicate and slender , the arms delicate , the hands small delicatea and start nervous . From the waist floats a brown robe interwoven with gold , through which one sees the naked legs . As a picture all this is really pretty . Miss Allan starts to dance , she does it simiảar to Miss Duncan ; she turns , drags and jumps , bends the upper body into curves , lifts the fine slende arns very dramatically , but always always moves her hands which she turns like in a battle to the inside and outside . ( That disturbs a lot . ) A terrible wax skull of Johannen lies there . Sje pulls it up to her , kisses it and dancesaround it ; this is Salome's visiov . he whole thing lasts about 15 minutes is quite pretty - you could almost say impressive / full of atmosphere . But , as always with these things , before you get animated , it is over . There is not much to Miss Allan's art of dance , but she gives a certain , plastic impression , a certai artistic line . But the whole apparatus , the staging for certain possibilities of atmosphere , have to be present . But then it would only be put - up and skill . , just as with all these specialities . But a few want to see truth . EXCERPT FROM LA MEU SE LIEGE 2 january 1905 : Prof Schott was one of the first to become interested in her art ( He was sculptor of " La Jeune fille lancang la Boule0 He gave her advice , as a master sculptor , on how to drape her clothes , He measured her by the standard of a scuptor and declared She has the perfect proportions of a Greek statue , with only the feet and hands avery little too small / " The sculptor SF GFR took on organis ation of the evening while the painter Skarbino took on the publicity for the evening . Mme . Israel , wife of the millionaire business man , provided who opened up her " salons " for the meetings f of the organising committee . 9
