Previous to this appointment , Rothwell had en joyed the distinction of being at the head of many great European orches tras , and had established himself as an operatic conductor of superlative gifts . In America he had been con ductor of the St. Paul Symphony , the Civic Orchestra concerts in New York City , and directed more than seventy concerts given in the Lewisohn Stad ium in New York , where attendance averaged more than six thousand per sons per night . He also served as guest conductor of the Cincinnati Sym phony Orchestra , and a like position with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra .
