Maud Allan , 73 , whose dance portrayal of Salome in scanty costume caused a sensation two generations ago , died today at a rest home . She had no living relatives . Miss Allan was a pioneer in esthetic dancing in filmy COS tumes , and by today's standards she was modest . But from 1903 to 1917 — the years of her greatest successes her draperies were thin and sensational . She was born in Toronto , the daughter of two physicians , Dr. William Allan and Dr. Isbel Hutchinson ( Allan . When she child the family moved to California . She studied the piano in San Fran cisco , Berlin and Vienna . In the Austrian capital Miss Allan switched to dancing and made her debut in 1903 . She danced before King Edward VII in 1907 , and the following year made her first appearance 1908 at London's Palace Theatre , where she introduced the Salome portrayal that shocked the world . After the death of her mother in 1930 , Miss Allan went into retirement for two years . Then she appeared in several plays in London . In 1938. an automobile crash in California injured her so severely that she did not dance again . She returned to London and early in the Second World War drove an ambulance during the Battle of Briiain . In 1941 , she returned to California and for a time worked as a draftsman at the Douglas Aircraft Co. in Santa Monica .
