At the Sudbury recital of 1957, Nancy’s Advanced students presented a work titled “The Sorcerer”. Standing at the back as the Sorcerer is Tini Pel. Pel would continue Nancy’s work founding the Sudbury Arts Guild and the Nickel Belt Ballet Company.

Nancy Lima Dent 107a, b, c
From Sudbury Daily Star, 25 May 1956, p. 17

Nancy Lima Dent 108a, b was folded in half and wrapped around items 109 to 114

Nancy Lima Dent 115a, b
The front of the clipping is in English but the back is in a Slavic language so both were copied in case the back text gives clues to the paper’s origin, dated 1956 in pen on the front

Nancy Lima Dent 121a, b, c
The front and back of this 8.5x14 sheet were clearly a house program but the inside had no program information and Nancy had used it to type up notes about classes.

Nancy Lima Dent 122a-e
Item e was folded in half and inserted into the program

Nancy Lima Dent 129a-b
The reverse side (b) appears to be a part of a report though the rest of the report is not in her files

132 – 204
These are all in a subfolder marked “Teaching Notes, Sudbury and Garson, 1955-1957”. Some of them were written or typed on the backs of recycled paper but if the information on the back was career related, I scanned both sides. That’s why you will see numbers with a and b on them and yet the scans will seem unrelated.

- She was visibly ved by the reception and ovation she received from the gathering . I leave with the feeling of having " learned much more ave given feeling of richness . and warmth achieved through the experience of working with many people of diverse nationalities and beliefs . a feeling that perhaps I may I may have helped to enrich the lives of many with music and dance a deeper feeling of what it means to be a Canadian , ' she told the gathering . “ I hope I have helped lay the foundation for schools that will develop and train many more young dancers in the Nickel District . The parents parents have been invaluable in helping with our dance school . Many students have developed where they can be regarded as student teachers . " She thanked everyone who had made her stay in Sudbury ** A memorable experience and one which I shall treasure all my life . 9 AND WHAT OF THE DANCERS ? More than 150 of them poured out their heart and soul into making the evening of dance the finest yet staged in Sudbury There was wonderful musical background , by Tchaikovsky , Sarasate , Kabelvsky , Cugat , Delib bes , McDowell , Lecocqu , Drigo , and Grofe , and English folk music . Israeli Folk Music , Jewish Folk Music , Italian , Ukrain ian , Spanish , Phillipino and Canadian Canadian folk music . All had some excellent choregoraphy set to the musical strains . There were baby ballerinas , as we said , in fluffy little tutus ; and there were statuesque figures in startling black leotards and tights . All excelled in rhythm , poise , gracefulness . Their training showed them to have developed along the wonderful lines of expressive ness and fluid body movement that Nancy herself possesses . a PARTICULARLY NOTEWORTHY was the dancing of Tini Pel , young Dutch woman , who starred in several productions , including that of the role of Sorcerer , which was highly stylized with effective lighting . She was supported in this event by Rene Edwards , Tula Wastila , Sylva VonStreit , Donna Reid , Luigi Renzella and and Jack Yrcha . The other talented teen - agers , Gloria Barylski and Catherine Sadick , did some fine dancing , both solo and duo . Their clever routine to popular music of Dragnet brought them a huge ovation . A clever little dancer , Phyllis Cronin , also earned plaudits for her pantomime of Wish I Were in The Army Again , and a poem of expression The Hunt , to McDowell's music , with Indian folk lore theme . THERE WAS SO MUCH that was enjoyable dancing of the little tots in a clever pantomime of the Kingdom of the Cats ; the children's ballet in two scenes based on ideas suggested by the children , The Magic Cup , starring Sharon Kawa , Diane Fren ette , Ida Sauve , Diane Thibauit , Diane Tonnos and Elizabeth Smaller We also enjoyed the class demonstration led by Ellen Rockwood , Phyllis Cronin , Liv Slettemoen , Tini Pel , Catherine Saddick and and Gloria Barylski . YOU COULDN'T HELP but be charmed with the antics of the tiniest tots , frocked as bunnies and butterflies with an In the Forest setting . Mrs. Shirley Routliffe did a tremendous job as co - ordinating committee chairman , the Canadian Folk Suite which preceded the Grand Finale was spectacular , to say the least , and showed some fine artistry , training and talent . AS we said before it was memorable evening of dance , thanks to Nancy Lima Dent . We ourself , enjoyed the training she gave us in class , during the past two years , we will miss her immensely , and we wish her happiness , success good luck in her new dancing ven tures . kes and Betty Wake
